Broadband in Trinidad and Tobago

Introduction

The term "broadband" is usually defined as high speed data transmission that is hundreds of times faster than analog dial-up.[1]

The T1 line  (transmission speeds of a constant 1.544 Mbits per second) is often considered to be the minimum speed that can be termed "broadband".

The actual defination of "broadband" varies from country to country. For example, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC)  in the USA defines broadband as "data transmission speeds exceeding 200 kilobits per second (Kbps), or 200,000 bits per second, in at least one direction: downstream (from the Internet to the user’s computer) or upstream (from the user’s computer to the Internet)" [2]

In Trinidad and Tobago, the Telecommunications Authority of Trinidad and Tobago (TATT) has defined "broadband" as a minimum of 128Kbps (128 kilobits per second). See Section 6.13, Indicator 3.1 of the TATT's Consumer Rights and Obligations Draft Policy:

There are two methods by which broadband can be delivered to the consumer:

- wired: examples: Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL), cable modem.

- wireless: uses a radio link between the customer’s location and the service provider’s facility. It can be mobile or fixed.

Both types are available in Trinidad and Tobago.
