Rules, Caution, Notes

General rules for using an e-mail list, forum or online message board

Avoid typing in CAPITALS: Text such as this is the equivalent of SHOUTING and is considered rude.

Use plain text in your messages.

Avoid word processor formats (e.g. .DOC) and HTML formatting in your messages to the various lists.

Do not send email attachments to the list; instead, provide a viable link to a site from which the file(s) can be downloaded.

Do not post irrelevant/"off-topic" material to the list.

Avoid crossposting, that is, sending the same message to all the mailing lists to which you are subscribed regardless of its content or relevancy to the lists.

"cut and paste" the appropriate sections when responding to a lengthy email; avoid reposting the entire message.

If you change the topic under discussion in a particular "thread", change the subject line of future messages!

Avoid auto e-mail responders. As an alternative, temporarily un-subscribe from the list (you can always re-subscribe). Each list has an unsubscribe option, be familiar with it. Contact the list owner if in doubt.

Avoid transmitting any content (defined as: text, information, data, binary files, links, software or images) deemed in-appropriate (as determined by the list operator/owner).

Avoid using offensive language/make racist/sexist/other prejudicial remarks.

Do not promote or provide instructions on how to commit website cracking, copyright infringement or any other illegal activity than can/will violate national and international law.

Do not "flame" (post abusive messages to/about) other members of the mailing list.

Do not post messages about hoax viruses to any list.

Do not post "spam" (i.e. "junk" or un-solicited e-mail) to any list.

If you must discuss something "in private" with another member of the list, email them directly.

Caution about e-mail lists, forums and online message boards

Unless stated otherwise (by the list owner), list members must decide upon what is considered appropriate content for these e-mail lists.

List owners cannot guarantee the accuracy, completeness, or usefulness of any content (i.e.opinions, advice, statements, services, offers, data, or other information) expressed or made available by users of these lists.

Users are responsible for the content they post to the list(s).

Users should be aware that any content downloaded or otherwise obtained through the use of these lists is done at their own discretion and risk. They are solely responsible for any damage to their computer(s), loss of data or any other sort of loss that results from the download/use of such content.

List owners who find in-appropriate or otherwise objectionable material submitted to a list, can edit, or remove such material at their sole discretion.

The list moderators/owners can terminate membership at their sole discretion.

In-appropriate activity/behaviour from a list member is grounds for termination of membership to that list.

List owners are not obligated to censor the material posted on any list.

Notes to parents about e-mail lists, forums and online message boards

These lists are open to subscription from any member of the public (both local and international). It is therefore possible that material you find to be in-appropriate (for your child) or offensive (to you) may be sent to the email address you used to subscribe to the list.

Each list has an un-subscribe option if you wish to remove your child or yourself from one or more of them.

If your child is subscribed to one or more of these lists, keep in mind that there are no age restrictions on membership! You should monitor or even censor what your child is receiving from these lists before he/she actually reads it.

The majority of members on these lists are over the age of 18 (the legal defination of an adult in Trinidad and Tobago is someone over the age of 18) thus "mature content" can and will occasionally be posted to these lists.

If you wish to subscribe to these email lists but want to avoid your children reading your mail, you can always use a free email account from a service such as Gmail, Yahoo or Hotmail.

You should personally supervise your children while they use the Internet

(e.g. while they surf the WWW, "chat", "IM", send/receive email, play games etc).

Parents are the best means of filtering/censoring Internet/email/"chat" content for children.
